Nordic Heritage Sport Club - 2012 Aroostook Cup Champions
Sunday, March 11, 2012 - 9:46pm
PRESQUE ISLE – The 2012 Aroostook Cup series finished up on Saturday with the Himie Towle Ski Frolic at the Nordic Heritage Center. Close to 120 participants took part in the event, which featured kids’ races, a 5 km tour, and a 10 km race. Beautiful sunny skies and warm weather helped make the day the most heavily attended Aroostook Cup race of the season.
The 10 km men’s race was a close one until the very end. Welly Ramsey (Northern Skiers), with a time of 20:09, just edged out fellow club-mate Mike Lessard by one second to take the win. Raleigh Gosseling of 10th Mountain was only three seconds behind Lessard for third. On the women’s side, Beth Ann Chamberlain, another Northern Skier, won with a time of 23:14. Lauren Jacobs of Nordic Heritage was second and Justine Cyr of 10th Mountain was third.
The club standings were very close coming into the last race. 10th Mountain Ski Club of Fort Kent was leading the by only two points ahead of Nordic Heritage Sport Club. Helped by high participation in their home event, NHSC pulled off an upset and took home the Aroostook Cup for the first time in history. The final tally had Nordic Heritage with 155 points, 10th Mountain with 136 points, and Northern Skiers of Caribou in 3rd place with 99 points.
The Aroostook End-of-Season ski celebration will take place on Saturday April 7th at Four Seasons Lodge in Madawaska. The celebration will recognize age-group winners and others from the Aroostook Cup series. More details on that, as well as results and photos from the entire season, can be found at www.goaroostookoutdoors.com.

February Frolic a Success!
Thursday, March 8, 2012 - 9:01am
CARIBOU - Despite 20 inches of new snow and thirty mile an hour winds, 56 skiers were out Sunday to participate in the first February Frolic sponsored by Cary Medical Center, Northern Skiers and the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department. There were two race venues, with the annual New Years skate ski race held at 11 a.m. at the Caribou High School Ski Center and then the 37th annual Henry Anderson Ski Dag held at 1:30 p.m. at the Caribou Ski Trails located at the Caribou Country Club.
As part of the Aroostook Cup Series, the races offered both racing and touring opportunities that catered to a wide array of skiing levels. The races also offered twelve age categories covering youngsters 12 and under as well as octogenarians. In the end the race venues proved that Nordic skiing truly does transcend ages as young skiers crossed the finish lines with older skiers at both venues.
In addition to some great ski conditions, participants were able to enjoy a great lunch at the Caribou Country Club provided by the Cary Medical Center food service as well as lots of door prizes. Ribbons were awarded to the first three male and female finishers in all twelve age divisions in each race, with some pleasant surprises to some competitors that certainly didn’t expect to finish with a ribbon. Special awards were also presented for the best combined times from each event for all age divisions, both male and female. The final event in the Aroostook Cup series is the Himie Towle Memorial Ski Frolic, happening on Saturday, March 10th at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle.
